* Always start by misting a heat-protective spray on wet hair. Not only does it stop hair from drying out over time (which makes it much more frizz-prone), it helps create a barrier against environmental moisture.

* Add a little anti-frizz product. Just keep the application light, and if you can, skip the holding products (like mousse, styling cream). While the temptation is always to pile on more products when it’s crappy out, this actually makes frizz seem worse most of the time.

* Blow your hair bone dry. Absolutely no moisture should be left in the hair when you’re trying to maintain a blowout in humid air.

* Let your hair cool completely before stepping out into the elements (or finish your styling by using your dryer’s cold setting). This’ll ensure that your cuticle lays flat so water vapor can’t sneak its way in.

* Resist running your hands through your hair. I always thought the oils from my fingers helped smooth frizz

We all had situations when in a few hours we had to be at a celebration but the hair looked terrible, dull and faded.

Now I’ll tell you about a perfect and easy way to change that and turn into a hot beauty with luscious bright hair!

The recipe is simple enough and doesn’t traumatize the hair. First of all wash your hair with the shampoo you usually use, then apply some conditioner but a bit less that you do ordinarily.

Now the main thing: pour some boiling water into a bowl and infuse two or three teabags in it (the number of teabags depends on the bowl size). Don’t use usual tea; if you do you’ll have to comb out the tea leaves for hours and hours. Let the decoction cool down.

No matter your hair type or texture, you know that summer can mean more bad hair days than any other season. So we’re sharing some expert hair tips to help you make your hair behave through to the fall.

As someone with naturally curly, daily-straightened hair, I fear the humidity that will invite the kinks and curls back to my perfectly ironed ‘do. If you usually let your curls go wild, you’re probably already dealing with that frizzy halo that happens on hot days. I spoke with Superstar Hair Challenge winner Jason Lee about summer frizz-fighting tips. I’ve also included step-by-step instructions on how to achieve Gisele Bunchen, frizz-free waves from John Frieda International Creative Consultant, Harry Josh.

Beauty Buff: Any frizz-fighting secrets for the summer?

Jason Lee: The most essential tip for folks with curly hair is to properly moisturize those ravishing ringlets! No matter what kind of curly hair you have, the proper moisturizing shampoos and treatments are the basis for great curls. (Jason recommends Keratase products.)

Another great tip for curly girls and boys is to rinse their hair with cool water and try not to over work the hair while styling or air drying. The reason for the cool rinse is because it helps to keep the cuticle smooth when styling which will help create frizz-less hair. Note, if diffusing the curl, one should also use cooler air to avoid fuzzies!

BB: How about for ladies like me who straighten their hair?

JL: If you’re a curl-girl gone straight, make sure you keep your hard work over a few days before washing again. The natural oils in your hair will help you to weigh down the propensity for waviness to return. Nowadays, there are mini flat irons available at your local beauty supply. These adorable teeny tiny weightless irons can be carried around in your Louis Vuitton bag, then pulled out and plugged in if your curls threaten to return during these humid months ahead. Do promise yourself however not to become addicted to the flat iron as damaged hair is a bigger problem than a taming a wave.

BB: What to do about the curly halo?

JL: That awful curly halo can be managed by finding the right styling product for your individual curl. Unfortunately, experimenting with proper products is the cross to bear for you kiddies out there with curly locks. Every curl is different and therefore (like finding a man) every product must be tried until you successfully discover the perfect match. Some of the companies with great curl products are Graham Webb, AG, Frederic Fekkai, Moroccan Oil, Bumble and Bumble, RUSK and KMS to name a few. Some people prefer gels over creams while others find success with silicones or beach sprays. The best advice I can give when choosing a styling product for curly hair is to make sure the product has low alcohol content as the alcohol will dry out the hair and therefore defeat the first step of moisturizing your curls.

BB: So what are your three top tips?

1. On towel-dried hair, spray Frizz-Ease Spiral Style Spray Gel evenly throughout hair from root to tip

2. Start blow-drying hair. Dry it in sections with a two-inch round natural bristle brush.

3. Once hair is dry, section and use a ceramic curling iron to create loose waves. To achieve natural looking waves, wrap one-to-two inch sections of hair around the curling iron, leaving an inch of hair at the ends.

Time to hit the beach, soak up some rays (through the sunscreen of course!), and spend time with family and friends. Summer always presents new hair challenges.

During the hot, humid months, hair often develops a mind of it’s own. Here are some quick and easy hair tips that will shape up those summer locks in no time and of course, not break the bank. In fact, many of these hair tips won’t cost you a thing!

1. Wash and condition correctly

“The scalp’s natural oils condition, so keep conditioner away from your roots when washing hair to avoid weighing down your locks. To be safe, start applying it at least three or four inches away from your scalp.” — Mark Townsend

“The natural oil in your scalp is the best conditioner you can get, so wash your hair every two or three days rather than daily. After a workout, shower as usual, but instead of shampooing, just wet the hair and massage your scalp with your fingers.” — Mark Townsend

*Tip: To maximize your conditioner, keep it in the refrigerator.

*Tip: You can make your own deep conditioner by mixing 1/4 cup honey with 2 Tablespoons of milk. Apply to hair, cover with a damp towel for 20-30 minutes. Wash and rinse hair.

2. Quick fix for fly aways

-Spray a bit of hair spray or gel onto a fine tooth comb to quickly fix those fly aways.

-Try an eyebrow brush with a bit of gel or hair spray to fix the fly aways

3. Undo product overload

-Too much product in your hair? Try simply wiping it out with a terrycloth towel. The cotton towel will absorb some of the excess product.

- Add a bit of baby powder on your comb. Run the comb through your hair focusing on the roots. Also, try using a large powder brush instead of a comb.

As the summer gradually descends on the nation’s capitol, thousands of African American women are considering what to do with their tresses. In addition to being harangued by the humidity of the city, Black hair is often caught in style limbo due to damage from over-processing or the many summer activities that “sweat hair out.” But according to area stylists, all is not loss.

Despite making up only 10 percent of the nation’s population, African American women spend more than $2 billion a year on hair care products according to a report released in 2008 by the Black Owned Beauty Supply Association – and still, the summer creates or exacerbates some heads.

Stylist Syphira Johnson, 28, of Silver Spring, said having healthy summer hair requires planning and care, and is not reliant upon the amount of money spent on products. Particularly for those Black women who will be going to swimming pools and the beach, prepping ones hair is essential.

A lot of African American women who are athletic will opt out of relaxers altogether in order to keep their hair from being further damaged by chlorine and other chemicals in swimming pools. However, for those who want to keep their hair relaxed and swim, it is crucial that they wrap their hair first, and then use a swim cap,” Johnson said.

Johnson said some women have avoided hair caps because they have proven to be unfashionable. In recent years several companies have come up with swim caps that are colorful and stylish enough to be worn by any fashonista.

“I like the look of those from a company called Headcovers, and Speedo makes great latex and silicone bathing caps. Some of my clients will wrap their hair, cover it in a silk scarf, and then use the bathing cap. The key is to keep the hair dry,” Johnson said.

Johnson said that for those women whose exercise routines cause excessive sweating, braided styles or sets could help maintain a healthy, head of hair through the summer. Johnson recommends cornrows for those who want to change styles often, and individual braids, such as Pixies or Twists, for those who want to maintain a particular style for up to five weeks.

For those transitioning from relaxed to natural hair, Johnson recommends Straw sets, where the hair is wet-set on drinking straws before being dried under a dryer for approximately 30 minutes. This allows the hair to hold the style for a couple of weeks, and prevents further damage through curling or flat irons.

“Braids have become acceptable in the workplace and that allows for a lot more freedom of expression, but also for healthier hair. Many of these styles can go straight from the boardroom into the steam room, so the versatility is worth it,” Johnson said.

Additionally, for those African American women who have been getting major flack for refusing to give up their relaxers, Naturopathic Doctor, Master Herbalist and author LaJoyce Brookshire, headquartered in New York, said a healthy lifestyle of detoxification means that surrendering to the natural is not necessary.

“We should be in a constant state of detoxification anyway. But, when we have assaulted our bodies with the application of harsh chemicals via relaxers, dyes, and yes even foods, we need to head straight to our kitchen and bathroom laboratories to flush our systems,” Brookshire said.

Brookshire, who has chemically treated hair, said in order to establish a favorable pH balance with Black hair, we must also have one with our bodies at the same time. That healthy pH should be between 7.0 and 7.435.

As for coloring agents, Brookshire said she is personally not a fan of them because they have a tendency to cause breakage around the hairline. Instead, she suggests natural alternatives, one found in any market.

“If I must use color I use the color sticks or henna. They both work just fine. In the summer, I allow the sun to work its wonder by adding fresh lemon with conditioner to my hair to lighten it gradually,” Brookshire said.

The key to great summer hair for African American women, whether chemically treated or natural, starts with plenty of water, exercise, and healthy eating habits to detoxify the body. Strawsets, braids, and counter-balancing the pH of the body following relaxing, should produce a city of happy, healthy heads.

Summer is on the way and as you dream of warm, sunny days, you decide you want a little (or a lot!) of that sunshine in your hair. Maybe you’ve never tried coloring your own hair, or maybe you are a serious pro; either way, these tips will get your summer color off to a spectacular start!

First, if you are going three shades or more lighter than your original color, you are going to need a bleach. If you have a perm, it is not a good idea to bleach over that as it will severely damage your hair. If you have previously bleached your hair and have more than a month’s worth of growth, this could cause an off-color stripe where the new bleach and old bleach meet.

Most salons call the brown to blonde transition a double process, but some hair color packages don’t explain what these means. Hair is made up of primarily red and black pigments and, as you lighten your hair you remove the black, leaving behind red.

This is what causes that orange or brassy look so many “bottle blondes” sport instead of truly gorgeous gold. If you are going for a warm, honey blonde you will bleach your hair, then lay a color down on top of the lightened hair. However, as time, environment and shampoo wear on your hair this can cause your bleached color to come through and dull the blonde.

When you choose a bleach, make sure it is one specifically for hair and is also safe to use on the scalp. Be very selective and, if possible, try to get recommendations from stylists or others who have worked with bleach.

You do not want to shortchange yourself by choosing a bleach that will strip and dry your hair or one that will damage, possibly even burn, your scalp. Most kits you can purchase in the store come with bleach packaged with the toner (color).

Depending if you are going all-over blonde or looking for highlights, you will use a special cap with holes poked through it so you can pull out strands to highlight. The disadvantage of this is with the cap it is impossible to get all the way to the scalp for bleaching. It is, however, easier than trying to highlight without using the cap.

Bleached hair will look darker when it is wet. Make sure when you do a strand test that you dried the hair. Definitely do a strand test so you know how long to leave the bleach on your hair.

Too much bleach will turn your hair green! If your hair does go green, do not try to cover it with brown, as it will only turn dark green. You will need to try balancing the green with a color that has some red in it.

You could try slathering ketchup or a henna mixture on your hair for 30 minutes instead of putting red dye down on your hair; that could save some chemical wear.

If your hair is gray, or has gray in it, those strands will turn quite blonde when bleached. You will want to take special care, as gray hair is often drier and more brittle than other hair colors.

econd is the actual bleaching process. If this is your first bleach, you will want to start by applying the bleach ½ inch from your scalp. Use a comb to do fine partings so you are sure to get all of your hair. It is a good idea to go back through your hair again to double check for any missed areas. Once your hair has reached about the midpoint of the color you want to achieve, then put the bleach on that last ½ inch of hair. This will ensure your color looks natural as roots are always slightly darker than the rest of your hair. When your hair has reached the color your want (and remember to judge by the time, not how it looks as your hair will be wet), rinse the bleach out with cool water. If the water is too warm it may irritate your scalp. Use a gentle shampoo on your hair, rinse again and towel-dry. Now you are ready to put on the toner.

Toner adds dimension and color to your blonde. In some cases, the bleached look may be just what you want, however for most it is just the beginning. When choosing your toner, make sure you have one without ammonia or peroxide as those can damage your hair. Toner is usually mixed with a developer, and applied directly to your hair. Leave the toner in for however long you need in order to allow the color to soak in (it shouldn’t be long) and rinse again. Above all, make sure you condition your newly-blonde locks with a high-protein conditioner to keep it shining and strong.
